Statistical Benefits: Shorter Labors, Less Cesareans, Better Breastfeeding Success
The word “doula” comes from Greek, meaning “a woman who serves”. We use it now to refer to a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother before, during, and after her delivery. Studies have shown that when doulas attend births, labors are shorter with fewer complications, cesarean rates drop drastically, and babies are breastfed more successfully!
Birth doulas recognize that birth is an important experience to mothers and families, and understands the emotional needs of a woman in labor. Doulas help families prepare for birth and teach them the best ways to accomplish their hopes and objectives. A doula will stay with the mother all the way through her labor and birth, and helps with initial breastfeeding and getting settled.
Our doulas will help you with your pregnancy questions, from physical aches and pains to assisting you in working out a birth plan and visiting about concerns you may have. They will meet with you a time or two before your labor, and are always available for counsel and comfort. They are on call 24/7 from week 37 until you have your baby.
Offered for any birth environment: home, birth center, hospital
We encourage every family, especially first-time mothers, to consider choosing a doula. Whether you choose an out-of-hospital birth where your doula is part of your home or clinic birth team, or you are planning to deliver in the hospital where your doula will be your support and help with advocacy and communication with the hospital staff, a doula will be a benefit to you and your family.
Special Situations? Have a midwife as your doula.
In addition, the midwives at Family Birth and Wellness Center provide specialized doula services for select women with risk factors that necessitate a hospital birth and lower their chances of successfully achieving a natural, vaginal birth. The cost of hiring a midwife as your doula is significantly more and is only made available on a case-by-case basis. For a quote, or to check availability, please contact us.
